Local SEO Checklist for Service Businesses: 10 Things to Fix First

Roofers, restaurants, clinics, and driving schools all win local search the same way. This is the order to fix things in, from the highest impact down.

in short

in short

To rank in local search, start with a complete and verified Google Business Profile, then build a dedicated page for each service and each area you serve, keep your business details consistent across directories, and earn steady reviews. Fix those four things before anything advanced.

Local search is where service businesses are won and lost. The people searching are ready to call. Here is the checklist, in the order we would work through it.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Verify the profile, choose the right primary category, add every service you offer, write a clear description, list accurate hours, and upload real photos of your work. This is the single biggest local ranking lever you control.

2. Ask for reviews on a schedule

Ask every happy customer, right after the job, with a direct link. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and specific way. Volume, recency, and your replies all matter.

3. Give every service its own page

One page per service, each with a clear title, a direct answer to what it is and what it costs to start, photos, and a way to contact you. A single 'Services' page cannot rank for five different searches.

4. Build pages for the areas you actually serve

For each city or neighborhood where you really work, create a page with genuine local detail: example projects, local questions, and the neighborhoods covered. Skip the copy-paste version.

5. Make your name, address, and phone number match everywhere

Check your website, Google profile, Facebook, Yelp, and industry directories. Fix any difference in spelling, suite number, or phone number.

6. Make your site fast and usable on a phone

Most local searches happen on phones. Test your site on a real device. Make the phone number tap-to-call and keep the contact form short.

7. Add local business schema

Structured data tells Google your business type, location, and service area in a machine-readable way. It supports, but does not replace, everything above.

8. Write for real customer questions

Add an FAQ and short guides that answer what people ask before they hire you. These earn traffic from search and get quoted by AI tools.

9. Earn a few local links

Local chambers, supplier pages, community sponsorships, and partner sites. A handful of real local links beats a pile of low-quality ones.

10. Track calls, not just rankings

The goal is the phone ringing. Track calls, form fills, and booking requests from search, and review them monthly so you can see what is working.

Profile and listing fixes can show movement within weeks. Ranking for competitive local terms usually takes a few months of consistent work, since it depends on how fast Google re-crawls and how strong your competitors are.

Only for areas where you genuinely work and can say something useful and specific. A thin page that only swaps the city name does not help and can hurt.
